Egg Drop

The Skinny

This spin on the classic “Egg Drop” challenge is a team based game that requires ingenuity, creativity, and teamwork.

How To Play

The players’ objective is to work together as a team to create a protective shield, cushion, barrier, or any other device to protect their egg from a height drop. Begin by splitting your group up into equal teams. A timer will be set for 15 minutes (you can alter the time to better fit your group or event), and on “go!” players will collaborate to create a structure to protect their egg. You, as the game moderator, are responsible to provide your students with a variety of different resources to use (example ideas: toothpicks, soda straws, styrofoam, sponges, tape, marshmallows, or newspaper). When the 15 minutes are up, one player will be selected from each team to drop their eggs from a specified height (ie. you can have each representative player stand on the same table and drop their eggs from that height). If more than one egg survives the first fall, then those teams move to the second round of drops in which players must drop their eggs from an even higher platform. Whichever team’s egg outlives all the others’ wins!

*Side note: eggs may sustain mild damage so long as they are still intact; only a fully cracked egg is considered “out.”

Equipment

  • Raw eggs
  • Materials for students to build protective “egg shields”

Tips or Variations

  • For smaller groups, you can have individuals compete instead of teams.
  • This game gets messy, so if you’re indoors, make sure to lay down a tarp or any other covering to minimize cleanup time.
